IDS and Arbutus Yearbook honored with 79 awards from Society of Professional Journalists, Indiana Collegiate Press Association

 SPJ & ICPA awards

The Indiana Daily Student editorial and creative teams and the Arbutus yearbook were recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Indiana Collegiate Press Association with 79 accolades overall during the organizations’ recent awards ceremonies.

“We’re incredibly proud of all of the work the IDS staff has done during such a tumultuous time and thankful for the recognition from SPJ and ICPA,” IDS co-Editor-in-Chief Caroline Anders said. “These awards are a great opportunity to see composite work from our paper as well as other top student journalists in the state. We feel so fortunate to get to work with all of these amazing young journalists, marketing professionals and more. Their commitment to doing community journalism is inspiring.”

SPJ granted three awards for the IDS’ editorial work April 10 during their Mark of Excellence Awards. This competitive merit asserts that a category can be left with no winner if the judges do not find a piece that embodies the caliber of journalism that they are looking for.

The IDS awards from SPJ included wins for Caroline Anders’ “Live and learn” in Feature Writing, as well as Emily Isaacman, Karli VanCleave and Mel Fronczek’s “Softening stigma” in Online Feature Reporting. Additionally, Matt Cohen was a finalist in the Sports Writing Category for his story “The General comes home.”

The IDS and the Arbutus yearbook were further awarded with a stunning 76 recognitions from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association on Monday April 19. These awards encompassed the advertising, Division I newspaper, online and yearbook categories. IDS co-Editor-in-Chief Emily Isaacman was chosen by the ICPA as its Brook Baker Collegiate Journalist of the Year, named after the renowned investigative journalist. Isaacman was chosen by the judge for her nuanced, careful reporting.

“Her empathy, coupled with thoroughness, is evident through her multiple interviews, many reaching beyond the borders of campus life,” the ICPA announcement reads. “The entire team or teams of students working at the IDS contributed to making all of these stories inviting to readers.”
