The IU Student Media Publications Board named Luke Norton the summer 2021 editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student on Friday.
The junior from Greenwood, Indiana, has worked for the IDS for the past four semesters. Norton has served as a track and field beat reporter, member of the 2020 summer sports staff, golf beat reporter and, most recently, spring 2021 sports editor.
“I have been told I’ve helped others develop during my time at the sports desk, which was a primary goal of mine when I entered the position,” wrote Norton in his application. “I want to use these skills to help the IDS during the summer session so we can produce the best paper that we can.”
Norton says he is prepared to take on the extra responsibility that comes with having a smaller staff over the summer. He plans to improve internal communication within the newsroom to ensure all members can perform at their best and wishes to work with the incoming fall 2021 staff to develop a relationship with the Media School’s interim dean. Additionally, he stressed the importance of working closely with the digital team and ensuring coverage of diverse communities.
The IU Student Media Publications Board is made up of professional journalists, professors, the dean of the Media School and current IDS staff members. The board conducted an interview Friday with each editor-in-chief candidate via a Zoom conference call.
