No. 2 IU men’s soccer took down the University of Notre Dame 3-2 in overtime Friday night in South Bend, Indiana. Freshman midfielder Tommy Mihalic scored twice for the Hoosiers in his debut, and junior midfielder Ben Yeagley scored the golden-goal winner.
Junior goalkeeper Roman Celentano had four saves in the win. Notre Dame senior forward Jack Lynn scored in the 10th minute, and graduate student Dawson McCartney scored in the 57th.
Last year’s MAC Hermann Trophy runner-up Victor Bezerra was injured for IU. The junior forward played the entire first half, but was on the bench to start the second. He reentered in the 56th minute, but went down again two minutes later and would not return. Bezerra led the Hoosiers with 12 goals last year.
Preseason All-American Spencer Glass made his return for the Hoosiers in the 37th minute. The senior defender hadn’t played for IU since breaking his leg on March 27 against Michigan last season. He played 48 minutes in his return.
Notre Dame held the advantage in shots 16-10 and shots on goal 6-4. IU had just one corner kick compared to Notre Dame’s eight. IU’s two conceded goals were more than it allowed in any game last season after giving up just six across 16 games.
The Hoosiers will return home to face Butler University at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Butler is coming off a 0-0 draw against Oakland University on Thursday.
