Three IU men’s soccer players were named preseason All-Americans by College Soccer News on Friday. Junior forward Victor Bezerra, last season’s MAC Hermann Trophy runner-up, and junior goalkeeper Roman Celentano were named to the first-team. Senior defender Spencer Glass was named to the second-team.
Bezerra was named first-team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches last season and led IU with 12 goals, the most for an IU player since Eriq Zavaleta scored 18 in 2012. He also set the IU record for most goals in a single Big Ten Tournament run with five last season.
Celentano, a second-team All-American last season, gave up six goals in 16 games for IU during his sophomore campaign. He was named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and totaled 59 saves last season. His career record is 21-4-4.
Glass is utilizing his extra year of eligibility the NCAA granted athletes because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The senior went down with a broken leg in IU’s March 27 match against Michigan last season, but was still named first-team All-Big Ten despite missing the team’s final regular-season game and its entire postseason run.
IU will take the field Saturday at Bill Armstrong Stadium for its final preseason exhibition against the University of Louisville. The No. 2 ranked Hoosiers will open their regular season against the University of Notre Dame on Aug. 27 in South Bend, Indiana.
