No. 17 IU football lost its season opening game against No. 18 Iowa 34-6 Saturday afternoon at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa. For the first time since 2017, IU started its season with a loss.
Less than three minutes into the game, Iowa had taken a commanding lead. Junior running back Tyler Goodson scored a 56-yard touchdown run on the fourth play of the game.
On the ensuing IU possession, senior Iowa defensive back Riley Moss intercepted a pass from junior quarterback Michael Penix Jr., returning it 30 yards for a touchdown, putting the Hawkeyes ahead 14-0.
Moss returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the game.
In his first game since tearing his ACL against Maryland last season, Penix threw for 156 yards and three interceptions on 14 for 31 passing. He was replaced by junior quarterback Jack Tuttle in the fourth quarter.
The Hoosiers will host the University of Idaho at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
