The IU Panhellenic Association cancelled paired events with the Interfraternity Council Saturday as a result of the increasing cases of sexual assaults occurring at fraternity housing or during fraternity events, according to an email sent to the PHA and the IFC.
PHA is a community of 22 sorority chapters at IU, including five chapters under disciplinary probation, that often collaborate with each other for charitable events and other activities, according to their website. The IFC represents 26 fraternity chapters at IU, including three suspended chapters, ten chapters under disciplinary probation, and one chapter facing a cease-and-desist, and is referred to as PHA’s male counterpart in the email.
PHA will cancel all events Saturday due to “a heightened number of reported sexual assault cases around our campus, specifically in fraternity housing or at fraternity events.” The email calls for the IFC to take swift action to hold their members accountable and to ensure the safety of PHA sisters.
“We ask that our IFC counterparts take this time to reflect on actionable strategies that will shift the current unsafe and unsustainable culture towards one of accountability and education,” the email said. “We do not want a temporary fix, but rather an active and permanent change in our Greek community."
