IU Student Government Congress passed two pieces of legislation involving police brutality and antisemitism Monday, according to an IUSG Congress press release. The body also confirmed three IUSG Supreme Court Justices during their meeting.
Congress passed a proclamation condemning the conduct of the Purdue University Police Department after an officer was accused of using excessive force while arresting a student. The proclamation expressed solidarity with the students and others involved in the incident. The proclamation will be sent to Student Body President Ky Freeman for his signature.
Proclamations issued by the Congress and signed by the president are used to push for university policies, actions or changes outside of IUSG’s immediate control and purview, according to the press release.
Congress also passed a non-binding internal resolution condemning recent online antisemitic comments directed toward Jewish students at IU. IUSG intends to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s non-legally binding working definition of anti-semitism and encourages Indiana University to do the same. As the first non-binding internal resolution of Congress, the resolution holds no official weight as an IUSG policy, according to the press release.
Kaine Eller, Noah Johnson and Larry McDowell were confirmed to the IUSG Supreme Court during the meeting. They will each serve for a term of three years. Congress also confirmed Eric Schmidt as the Co-Director of City Relations.
The next IUSG Congress General Assembly meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28 in the Dogwood Room at the Indiana Memorial Union.
