IDS Connect newsroom awards

Matt Cohen named journalist of the year, IDS earns top honors from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association

The Spring 2022 IDS staff poses outside of Franklin Hall.

The Indiana Daily Student was recognized by the Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) and College Media Business & Advertising Managers (CMBAM) organizations’ 2022 awards seasons. Notably, the IDS was selected as the Advertising Publication, Newspaper (Division 1) and Online Publication of the Year by the ICPA.

"We have an incredible staff of hard-working students," said IU Student Media Adviser Ruth Witmer. "It's wonderful to see them receive recognition for the great work they're doing for readers online and in print."

Matt Cohen was chosen to be the ICPA Brook Baker Collegiate Journalist of the Year for his distinguished reporting. The judges noted that:

“Matt Cohen’s remarkable portfolio showcases his ability to tackle in-depth subjects in a way that invites the reader in…In addition, he has given attention to stories that might not have been written — such as the one about the many unmarked graves in Bloomington — if not for a young reporter willing to spend a lot of time and care getting people to open up about their families…In short, Matt’s work is outstanding.”

By Ernie Pyle’s desk in the IDS office inside Franklin Hall, there is a plaque commemorating all the ICPA journalists of the year from IU. Since this honor was developed, in the late 1990s, most of the recipients have been IU students.

The awards that the IDS was given from both associations are as follows:
