The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office identified the skeletal remains found in 2004 in Monroe County, according to a press release from the Office of the Monroe County Sherrif.

They were identified as Steven Gabbard’s, who is from Louisville, Kentucky, and was 38 years old. Family members reported he was missing in June of 2002. He was last seen in Indianapolis.

His skeletal remains were found on Richardson Road, which is near Lake Lemon, in northeast Monroe County. The detectives at the time believed it was homicide based on evidence collected, according to the press release.

Monroe County Council funding allowed for investigators, who partnered with Othram, to obtain a forensic genealogy DNA examination. This would compare the DNA of Gabbard’s family members to the skeletal remains that would be found to be Gabbard’s, according to the press release.

The DNA of Gabbard’s nephew was compared to the skeletal remains and confirmed it was Gabbard.
