COLUMN: How to create the perfect Valentine’s Day gift basket

entvalentine013123-illo

If you’re looking to secure a special person as your Valentine this year, there’s no need to hire Cupid to strike them with his arrow; just make them a thoughtful gift basket. Below, you’ll find the perfect formula to make this for a friend, family member or that special someone to ensure they’ll want to be your Valentine for Februarys to come.

Homemade:

If you’re ready to put in some elbow grease, try making some heart shaped cookies, fruit filled pastries or chocolate covered pretzels or berries. For those more inclined to crafting, make matching bracelets with embroidery floss or create a pair of earrings with some simple supplies from a local jewelry store, like Moon Stones in Bloomington.

Treats:

Buy their favorite candy, cookies or other treats they might not have every day. Be sure not to skip out on the cheesy, love-themed things like message hearts; those are what add Valentine’s Day charm.

Elevate their everyday life:

Consider helping them stock up on some daily products to make their life a little easier. Think of their favorite body wash, lotion, lip balm or other self-care products, and buy them some backups or a new scent you think they would like. If they’re always using disposable plastic water bottles, look into upgrading them to an insulated metal one. When in doubt, mints and gum are a universal hit.

Something fancy:

This doesn’t need to be expensive, it just needs to make them feel expensive. Think a nice pair of socks or a bag or wallet that would be practical and stylish. Try a fanny pack or belt bag for someone active, a leather wallet for the diva and a tote for someone who’s always on the go. If you want to give them something the two of you can enjoy together, try a tasteful drink to share, paired with a set of glasses. I love a good sparkling cider or Trader Joe’s Sparkling Pink Lemonade — if you’re looking to keep with the Valentine’s Day theme.

A personal touch:

To finish, you need something sentimental and personal. Printing photos is easier than ever at drugstores. Frame a nice photo of the two of you or get creative and make a collage or scrapbook. If all else fails, a handwritten card expressing your love and appreciation is sure to warm their heart.
