A man was injured after a shooting at 4:05 a.m. Monday on the 7000 block of South Walnut Street in Smithville.

Monroe County sheriff deputies responded to the shooting and located two non-life-threatening gunshot wounds on the victim’s back, according to a statement from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The victim was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

The victim called 911 to report that two individuals were tampering with his pickup truck, according to the statement. The victim was shot after opening his back door to confront the suspects.

Deputies used a drone to locate one of the suspects who was hiding behind multiple properties on the 7600 block of South Fairfax Road, according to the statement. That suspect was preliminarily charged with possession of methamphetamine and resisting law enforcement.

There is still one outstanding suspect. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office does not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

According to the statement, the incident appears to be targeted and both suspects are known to the victim.
