COLUMN: Basic clothing is in and taking over

entstreetwearcolumn090623.jp

All around campus, you can see hints of street style while walking to class every day.

In the world of fashion, basic, timeless pieces have become the most popular style.

During the COVID era, since people were stuck in the house, comfort became clothing-priority number one. Many small online businesses began to soar by adding fun designs to originally boring sweatshirts or sweatpants.

Now, streetwear is all about pairing basic pieces to create unique outfits. Think plain or graphic t-shirts and tank tops, as well as simple and classy going-out tops. For bottoms, you can see extreme miniskirts, low-waisted jeans, and denim skirts. Shoe-wise, kitten heels, sneakers with ankle socks and tall boots are very popular.

The motto for trendy outfits these days? Classic and minimal is best.

With these items, accessorizing is your best friend. When you walk along Kirkwood, you might see people with simple shoulder bags or fun necklaces to pair with their relatively laid-back outfits. There are many more items that complement these looks, but they all have one thing in common: they’re simple, basic and classy.

These outfits can be seen anywhere around Bloomington, styled to each person’s unique taste. This basic style can also be found on famous models like Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid. Famous influencers like Alix Earle, Olivia Jade and others flaunt the look as well.

Simple white or black tank tops have made a strong comeback. Many major magazines and newspapers are noticing the trend as well, such as The New York Times, Vogue, New York Magazine and InStyle Magazine. These tanks, although very simple, are a staple in my closet. You can dress them up or down depending on the day. Basic tops are still flattering and can make you feel confident all day long.

The style is clean and can be customized to anyone’s taste.

Although these pieces are simple, you can add layers or find fun prints to add to your outfit. Basics never really go out of style. Fashion’s return to simplicity means pieces that are always wearable and timeless.

The low-waisted baggy jeans are my current favorite. I enjoy the looser look and I believe they flatter on all body types. These jeans are also much more comfortable than the cinched-tight pairs that many people used to wear, myself included. I appreciate the baggy style of jeans and how it looks with all different types of shoes and tops. You can wear a baggy T-shirt or a tight tube top and baggy jeans will look amazing.

I enjoy this emerging classic style a lot more than the previous style of sweatshirts and sweatpants because you get to customize this style so much more. The sweats are still being worn and of course, are a good option when trying to find a quick, comfortable outfit. However, I realize that I feel much more confident when I feel more put together in a dressed-up outfit. The great thing about the basics in style right now is that they are just as comfortable, but usually look better than the same old athleisure.
