OPINION:  A letter to myself, delving into new experiences and opportunities at IU

Dear reader,

I empathize with your infectious enthusiasm and boundless excitement for your freshman year at college, armed with the determination to change the world. But don’t forget, Indiana University encompasses far more than your academics. It's a rich tapestry of diverse opportunities, experiences and knowledge waiting to be explored. Don't limit yourself to one goal; embrace the entirety of this academic and personal journey, as it will undoubtedly shape and enrich your growth in ways you can’t imagine.

The first semester of my freshman year was an intense whirlwind. It felt like I was caught up in a tornado of an overwhelming amount of coursework leaving little room for my passions. I was really stressed with my classes and keeping track of all my assignments.

One fall day while I was walking back from class past the Hamilton Lugar School lawn, I saw a sizable assembly of students engrossed in a display of music and synchronized movement. The atmosphere was charged with the pulsating rhythm, and it was clear that everyone was glad to be there dancing in tune. Even though many of us had never heard that music before, everyone had their widest smiles on display.

Driven by my curiosity and a yearning for a break from the relentless academic grind, I ventured closer to the bustling crowd. A dancer in the group extended an invitation. I immediately accepted the offer, left my bag in the middle of the lawn, found a partner and melded into the rhythm, mirroring the choreographed moves demonstrated by the leader.  I danced for almost an hour but did not feel tired for even a minute second.

Later that day, I learned this impromptu rendezvous was a practice session for a Latin Dance club actively recruiting. Making a commitment that I would push myself to try new things, I eagerly became a part of the club, immersing myself in the captivating world of Latin dance.

Although it gradually became clear that dance was not my ultimate calling, the experience proved to be transformative in a different sense. I always enjoyed the sessions and the chance to relax outside of the classroom. It shattered the confines of the academic bubble that I had inadvertently put myself in. This revelation reinforced the notion that IU offered a multitude of choices to explore my interests. Refraining from taking full advantage of this diverse array of opportunities would be something I regret. And as every business class had emphasized the importance of averting losses, I vow to apply this same principle to the rest of my college life.

This spontaneous decision to join the dance performance marked a turning point in my college journey. It served as a reminder that beyond the confines of textbooks, there were several opportunities for exploration at every corner of the university. This encounter not only motivated me to find my inner passions but also opened the door to a vibrant community that would become an integral part of my college experience.

Here's my advice to you as you enter college: approach your academic journey with an appetite for learning. By doing so, you'll have the chance to discover your true passions. Make it a priority to seize every opportunity that Indiana University offers, maximizing your potential for growth. Wishing you an incredible year ahead filled with exploration and growth!

Sincerely,

Prakriti
