About $2,000 worth of items stolen from IU’s Read Hall over winter break

Crime Filler

Four students reported two separate incidents of items stolen from their locked dorm rooms inside Read Hall over winter break, according to IU Police Department Public Information Officer Hannah Skibba.

IUPD responded to Read Hall to investigate the two burglary reports Sunday. Skibba said two residents reported a pair of Air Jordan sneakers and a speaker were stolen from their room during the break, amounting to about $490. Another pair of residents reported cash, a speaker, Nike sneakers and sunglasses were stolen, amounting to about $1,550.

Although both rooms were kept locked during the break, Skibba said neither showed signs of forced entry. The exact date of the burglaries remains unclear, but the IUPD crime log lists the timeframe of the burglaries between Dec. 21 and Jan. 6 — when most students had left their residence halls for break.

A total of seven burglaries have been reported to IUPD since Thanksgiving break last semester, according to the IUPD crime log. IUPD received reports of burglary at both Ernie Pyle Hall and Wilkie Mason Hall happening over Thanksgiving Break. Earlier in 2023, four burglaries were reported from IU’s Eigenmann Hall.

Both Read Hall burglaries remain open cases.
