Indiana swim and dive trounces Purdue on senior day

On a cool, misty Saturday morning in Bloomington, the Indiana men’s and women’s swim and dive teams sent its senior classes off  with two dominant victories over in-state rival Purdue. The men claimed a 218-82 win, with the women following suit with a 221-79 victory.  

Before the meet got underway, Indiana recognized each of their 14 graduating seniors. Warren Briggs, Brendan Burns, Billy Cruz, Tristan DeWitt, Logan Graham, Maxwell Reich, Armando Vegas, Elizabeth Broshears, Anna Freed, Anne Fowler, Catherine Graham, Ellia Ristic, Mia Ristic, and Ashley Turak were all celebrated for their contributions to the program.  

The Hoosiers set the tone right away with victories and second place finishes in the men’s and women’s 200-meter medley relay. Junior Anna Peplowski ran away with the women’s 1000-meter freestyle (9:51.59), winning by nearly an entire length of the pool.  

Indiana was in complete control all the way through, picking up multiple wins from their seniors along the way. The Hoosiers swept 11 of 32 events, including Maxwell Reich’s victory in the 100-meter breaststroke (53.63). Senior Ashley Turak picked up two victories on her senior day — the 100-meter breaststroke (1:02.72) and the 100-meter freestyle (49.76).  

Ellia Ristic, Brendan Burns and Anna Freed won the women’s 500-meter freestyle (4:52.52), men’s 100-meter butterfly (47.34) and the women’s 200-meter individual medley (2:02.35), respectively.  

Senior Anne Fowler made history in the diving pool. Her score of 415.58 in the 3-meter championship is a new program record. while she also took the 1-meter crown with a score of 332.70.  

Junior Skylar Liu and freshman Ella Roselli had top-three finishes in the women’s platform event — Liu claimed first place (378.60) and Roselli got third (287.70).  

The men’s divers struggled without juniors Carson Tyler and Quentin Henninger, both of whom are preparing for the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar scheduled for Feb. 2-18. Purdue took two of three podium positions in both events. Boilermakers junior Jordan Rzepka won both the 1-meter (409.43) and platform events (496.20).  

Indiana sophomore Maxwell Wienrich was the best diver of the day for the Hoosiers with his second place finish in the platform event. 

The Hoosiers will host both Wisconsin and Louisville on Feb. 2 to wrap up their regular season before the Big Ten Conference Championships and NCAA National Championships on March 27.
