Stanford University women’s basketball head coach Tara VanDerveer made history Jan. 21, securing career victory No. 1,203 in a 65-56 win over Oregon State University.
VanDerveer, a starting guard on Indiana’s women’s basketball team from 1972-1975, surpassed long-time Duke University men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski for most wins in college basketball history.
“It is a big number,” VanDerveer said after breaking the record. “I’m very appreciative of the great players I’ve coached and the great places I’ve been. I’m very humbled.”
During her playing days, VanDerveer helped the Hoosiers make the Final Four of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women’s tournament and frequented Bob Knight’s coaching classes.
VanDerveer was inducted into the Indiana University Hall of Fame in 1995 and was awarded IU’s Bicentennial Medal for her service and support of the university in 2021.
At the national level, VanDerveer was enshrined in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.
VanDerveer will return to Bloomington next season, when Indiana hosts Stanford in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall as part of a scheduled home-and-home series.
