Shakespeare’s ‘Measure for Measure’ coming to IU’s Studio Theatre Jan. 19

entshakespeareperformance011724

The year has just begun and IU’s Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance is already preparing for a show. At 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 19-27 at the IU Studio Theatre, director and IU professor of practice, Jenny McKnight  will present a stripped-down production of Shakespeare's play Measure for Measure.”

In “Measure for Measure,” the clash between government regulation and female autonomy takes center stage. Shakespeare’s comedic exploration of legal scenarios is a five-act play, which was first published in 1623. “Measure for Measure,” is often classified as a problem play because it does not fit into a specific category, such as a tragedy or a comedy. Instead, it uses dark humor to fill the play with irony and the theme of power — becoming/transcending as a “dark” comedy.

“Measure for Measure,” is one of five productions the IU Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance is putting on this semester. It is the only Shakespeare play, automatically giving the cast a crowded audience.

Currently the performances for “Measure for Measure,” are all sold out. However, you can find more information about the play here.
