Each year, IU’s Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance brings in an artist from around the world to teach students. Traveling from Detroit, MI, with a love for Shakespeare, Sam White will be this year’s spring guest artist.
She will be a visiting assistant professor and is directing the powerful play, “Pipeline,” on Feb. 29, at the Wells-Metz Theatre.
In an interview on the YouTube channel “Shakespeare in Detroit,” White discussed how she was introduced to Shakespeare at just eight years old. Growing up, reading Shakespeare was used as a punishment from her mother. Quickly, that punishment turned into White’s passion and career.
White is the founder of the award-winning non-profit organization, “Shakespeare in Detroit”. As an award-winning director, she has trained at the Stratford Festival in Canada in their workshop for classical direction, Yale University, and has delivered TED talks and taught across the United States at various schools such as The University of Michigan.
White is no stranger to IU. In 2023, she directed the Shakespearian play “The Winter's Tale”.
White is the most recent guest artist among the 60 who have come before her which include, Meryl Streep, Larry Kramer and Carol Burnett.
Tickets for the play can be purchased on the theatre department’s webpage.
