The Monroe County Emergency Management Agency is opening warming stations from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day from Jan. 13-20 in preparation for dangerously cold temperatures, according to the Monroe County website.
Warming stations will be at Bloomington Fire Station 1 and 2, Ellettsville Fire Department Headquarters and several Monroe Fire Protection Districts. A map with all the warming station locations is available here.
The stations will provide an opportunity for people to warm up if they don’t have other access to heating. No food, water, showers or sleeping areas will be provided.
The forecast for Saturday shows a high of 26 degrees with morning snow showers. Temperatures will continue to drop Sunday, with a possible winter storm expected. Throughout the week, the high is forecasted to range from 10 to 24 degrees. While hypothermia is possible at temperatures above 40 degrees, the risk increases as temperatures drop and wind speeds increase. To avoid hypothermia, people should dress warmly and avoid being outside for long periods of time.
