Former Indiana men’s basketball head coach Mike Davis mutually parted ways with the University of Detroit Mercy, the school announced Wednesday afternoon. Davis finished the season with a 1-31 record in his sixth campaign with the school.

Davis spent six seasons at Indiana between 2000-06 and was Bob Knight’s successor. He compiled a 115-79 record with the Hoosiers and notably led the 2001-2002 team to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament National Championship before falling short to Maryland.

He resigned from the position in February 2006, wanting to end his tenure on his own terms. Davis wore the burden of being Knight’s replacement and constantly received criticism prior to his resignation.

Following his time at IU, Davis took over as head coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for six seasons. He went 122-73 with the Blazers with an NCAA Tournament appearance before being fired in 2012. He then spent six more seasons as a head coach at Texas Southern University, where he went 115-89 with four NCAA Tournament appearances before leaving for Detroit Mercy.

Davis finished his time at Detroit Mercy with a 60-119 record. His son, Antoine Davis, played at Detroit Mercy from 2018-23 and finished his career with 3,664 points — 3 shy of Pete Maravich’s NCAA Division I scoring record.
