The 84th annual IU Writers’ Conference will be hosted from June 6-9 in Maxwell Hall. The conference includes workshops for fiction, poetry, creative and nonfiction writing, classes, panels, readings and Q&A sessions.
Workshops are held in three-hour sessions starting at 9 a.m. with lunch talks and Q&A sessions following at 1 p.m. Classes are held in the afternoon as three one-hour sessions beginning at 2 p.m. and running until 5 p.m. These will be followed by a reading from a faculty member in the evening. The readings during the conference are a free event open to the public for the Granfalloon Festival. They will begin at 7 p.m. on June 6, 7 and 9 at the Gayle Karch Cook Center.
Workshops led by Jos Charles, T Kira Madden and Sequoia Nagamatsu are available for those who are looking for feedback on their manuscripts, essays or poems.
Charles is teaching the Poetry Workshop and is an author and Pulitzer-finalist. Madden, a Chinese and Kānaka Maoli writer and photographer, is teaching the Memoir Workshop. Nagamatsu is teaching the Fiction Workshop and is author of the National Bestselling novel, “How High We Go in the Dark."
Each of these workshops is on a first-come, first-served basis and will close at 15 participants.
Those interested in participating must submit their finished manuscript to work on during the workshops. Following registration and payment, email your manuscript to writecon@indiana.edu and use the subject format “Last Name ‘Genre’ Manuscript.” All manuscripts must include a header with student name, title and page number and must be double-spaced in Times New Roman font size 12. Participants of the Fiction/Nonfiction Workshop may submit up to 20 pages of prose and Poetry Workshop participants must submit 8-10 pages.
Classes are available to students looking to ask faculty any questions and learn about new writing techniques. Participants do not have to submit work to register and are not required to share work with peers. Classes will be taught by Torrin A. Greathouse, Angela Jackson-Brown and Grace Talusan. The Poetry Class will be taught by Greathouse, who is a transgender poet and essayist. Jackson-Brown is teaching the Fiction Class and is an award-winning writer, poet and playwright. The Nonfiction Class will be taught by Talusan who teaches at Brown University in their Nonfiction Writing Program.
Workshops cost $825.00, including all classes, panels and readings and the $25.00 registration fee. Classes are $400.00 and include access to classes, panels and readings and the $25.00 registration fee. Those who register for only the classes will not have access to the workshops. All participants must pay in full to secure their spot in workshops and classes.
For a discount on classes, IU students can email writecon@indiana.edu to receive a registration code that will reduce the cost of classes to only $100.00. Registration is open through the start of the conference.
