Thirty-one swimmers and nine divers are representing the Indiana swimming and diving program at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials through June 23 with the chance to qualify for the 2024 Paris Games.
The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, which started Saturday, are being held in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium, the first time the event has been located on a football field.
In each swimming event, the top two swimmers are expected to make the Olympic team individually as long as they also make an Olympic qualifying time standard. Up to the top six in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events will likely qualify for the relays.
Lilly King, who graduated in 2019, and Blake Pieroni, who graduated in 2018, will both seek their third Olympics at the trials, the most of any Hoosier competing in the event. King has won two gold medals and five medals overall in her Olympic gold career, while Pieroni has three gold medals.
King enters the trials with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke, respectively. On the men’s side, current IU swimmer Josh Matheny is the No. 2 seed in the 100-meter breaststroke and the No. 3 seed in the 200-meter breaststroke.
With a time of 59.42 seconds Saturday, Matheny advanced to the 100-meter breaststroke final, only eight hundredths behind top finisher Charlie Swanson.
Rising senior Anna Peplowski also represents the Hoosiers at the 2024 trials. Following her season at Indiana in which she won medals in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events at the NCAA Championships, Peplowski’s No. 7 seed in the 200-meter freestyle gives her a real shot to qualify for the Olympics.
A personal best time of 4:09.20 in the 400-meter freestyle Saturday earned Peplowski a sixth-place finish after entering as the No. 15 seed.
Coinciding with the swimming trials is the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials held in Knoxville, Tennessee.
In the three synchronized events, the winning team will gain qualification to the Olympic team. For the individual events, the top two men and women of the springboard competition make the team, as well as the men’s and women’s winners of the platform event.
Former Hoosier Jessica Parratto enters the event aiming to book her third Olympic games appearance, the most of any Indiana diver competing at the event. The 2019 Indiana graduate will join Arizona grad Delaney Schnell to compete in the synchronized 10-meter event. Parratto and Schnell won silver at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the same event.
Attempting to earn his second Olympic games appearance, 2022 Indiana graduate Andrew Capobianco will compete in the 3-meter springboard event. Capobianco won silver at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the same event.
Current IU diver Carson Tyler will compete in the 3-meter diving event against Capobianco and in the platform diving event. Tyler was the NCAA champion for both events this past spring, achievements he reached alongside accolades such as College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America Diver of the Year, Big Ten Diver of the Year and Big Ten Diver of the Championships.
In total, Indiana has earned 241 Olympic swimming and diving berths for 26 different countries. The medal count currently sits at 121 with 60 gold, 23 silver and 38 bronze.
