Part of Indiana Avenue closes until late August

The stretch of Indiana Avenue between Kirkwood Avenue and Sixth Street closed Monday due to the ongoing Clear Creek Culver reconstruction project.

It is expected to reopen Aug. 29, three days after IU fall semester classes start Aug. 26, according to a notice on the City of Bloomington website.

The city initially estimated in a press release the closure would end by early August, before students returned to campus.

The project began Feb. 5 with the goal to improve stormwater drainage and utility infrastructure by replacing an existing limestone tunnel — which was built in 1900 — with a new concrete tunnel in the downtown Bloomington area from Dunn Street to Indiana Avenue.

The IU Von Lee parking lot, also closed for the project, will reopen in August, as well. The full project is expected to be completed in October, according to the City of Bloomington’s release.
