The 2024-25 US News and World Report’s Best Global Universities list — ranking universities worldwide — named IU Bloomington the best global university in the state of Indiana and 135th overall out of 2,250 universities.

IU placed in the top 50 in Economics and Business, as well as in Education and Education Research. It also finished in the top 100 in eight out of the 31 surveyed study areas, encompassing all IU departments.

“This recognition acknowledges the groundbreaking research of IU Bloomington faculty, which is regularly cited by experts around the world,” IU President Pamela Whitten said in an IU press release Thursday. “Our ranking is also a testament to our robust international partnerships with communities and institutions on every major continent.”

The Best Global Universities list is a ranking of universities’ reputations worldwide measured by their contributions to global research. The list considered 13 factors in calculating the universities’ global rankings, with research programs and publications being weighted heavily. IU was ranked 109th overall in Global Research Reputation.

Education and Education Research was IU’s highest placing study area according to the rankings, landing at 38th in the world.

“The School of Education faculty’s research is clearly respected worldwide, and our global reputation has been enhanced through our strong history of international collaborations,” IU Bloomington School of Education Dean Anastasia Morrone said in the release.

The School of Education has a presence on every continent except Antarctica. It takes on several globally relevant projects each semester. One project from education professor Carmen Medina, is an education initiative in Puerto Rico, transforming elementary education from an Americanized system to one relevant and unique to Puerto Rican culture, according to the release.

IU ranked 43rd in Economics and Business category, associated with the Kelley School of Business at IU. US News ranked it 19th in publications among the 10% most cited in the world, and 37th in total publications and citations, according to US News.

IU shares 135th place with South Korea’s Seoul National University, ranked as the top university in South Korea and the 23rd best university in Asia.

Other notable placements in Indiana include Purdue University, which ranked 167th overall, and Notre Dame, ranked 378th.

The Best Global Universities ranking differs from US News’ annual National Best Universities list, which focuses more on graduation rate and performance. IU ranks 73rd on the National list. It was ranked at 72nd last year.
