Monroe County is under a flood watch from 8 a.m. Tuesday through 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. It is one of 11 Indiana counties under a watch.
According to the NWS, Monroe County has a 70% chance of rain Monday night, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms through midnight. More showers and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday. This excessive rainfall could produce flash flooding.
Under a flood watch, conditions for flooding are favorable.
If conditions worsen, a flood advisory could be issued. This means flooding is not bad enough to issue a warning but could cause inconvenience and could threaten property and life if residents don’t exercise caution.
A flood warning occurs when flooding is imminent. A flash flood warning occurs when a flash flood — a sudden, violent flood — is imminent.
Residents are recommended to get to higher ground, avoid flood waters on foot and in vehicles and stay away from submerged electrical outlets in the event of a flood.
Monroe County also remains under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Monday.
Residents can monitor the forecast through local weather channels and NWS live trackers.
