Band in a Hat Showcase to bring together new bands Sept. 1

Don’t miss the chance to see brand new bands perform for the first — and possibly last — time at the Band in a Hat Showcase from 5-8 p.m. Sunday. The free event will take place at the Banneker Community Center.

Band in a Hat creates 10 brand new bands by bringing together random applicants selected in June and giving them just two months to create a name and write songs for the final showcase.

Some of the new local bands performing together Sunday are “Mullet for my Valentine,” “Context Clues” and “The Cut Corners.” A full list of the bands can be found on Visit Bloomington’s website. The bands are given the opportunity to perform two to four songs, which can include original pieces or covers. The event has the potential to include a variety of different genres depending on what the band decides on. Previous years have seen bands perform pop punk, rock, shoegaze and hardcore.

Though the event is free for all, audience members are encouraged to pay what they can at the door. More information can be found on Visit Bloomington’s website.
