Indiana rising junior Carson Tyler finished fourth in the 3-meter springboard at the Paris Olympic Games, missing out on a medal in his first career Olympic event.

Tyler’s path to Paris began at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, where he became the first male U.S. diver since 2000 to qualify for both the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform events.

The Olympic preliminary round for the 3-meter springboard provided an unexpected scare for Tyler. After the first four dives, Tyler sat in 19th place, one spot off the cutline for the semifinals. However, his next two dives scored 73.5 points each, which catapulted his position to 10th.

Tyler’s semifinal performance was much different from his prelims, as he scored 48.2 points better than his prelims score and finished seventh overall. Still, his score of 438 was 27.05 points behind the top three.

In the finals Thursday morning, Tyler scored 429.25, 71.15 points behind the bronze medalist, Osmar Olvera from Mexico. His fourth-place finish was the best for an American in the 3-meter since 1996.

Tyler’s second and final appearance at the Paris Olympic Games was in the 10-meter platform event Friday, where he finished 19th in the preliminary round and missed the cut for the semifinals.

In his junior season at Indiana, Tyler was an NCAA Champion in the 3-meter and 10-meter events. His success also earned him IU Athlete of the Year alongside fellow rising junior and Team USA Olympian Anna Peplowski.
