Applications for the IU Board of Trustees’ student trustee position open Sept. 23, according to assistant board secretary, Mary Mortara.
Any full-time undergraduate or graduate student at Indiana University can apply for the position, which includes a two-year term from 2025-27.
To apply, students must maintain full-time status for the entire term. Students who plan on graduating during the term must document their intent to attend graduate school at IU.
Other requirements include several personal statements, a resume and at least one letter of recommendation. The application will be available online or by paper mail. .
The Student Trustee Search and Screen Committee will select applicants for interviews, which will take place in the spring. The committee will then send 10 applicants to the governor, who will appoint the student trustee.
The student trustee is one of nine members on the IU Board of Trustees. They have the same responsibilities and rights as the other board members. The student trustee participates in four board meetings a year, serves on board committees and participates in university events, along with completing assigned projects. Student trustees serve two years, compared to the three-year terms of the other board members.
Kyle Seibert is the current student trustee. Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb appointed him in 2023, and Seibert is pursuing a master’s in public affairs. He also served as IU student body president during the 2022-23 school year and as a student representative for IU’s comprehensive 2030 plan. The plan aims to improve student retention, increase affordability and better student life.
