Students now have a chance to have a direct say in where their money goes by joining the IU Committee for Fee Review. The committee, which includes students and is overseen by student government leaders, convenes every two years to decide how to allocate money generated from student activity fees.
All students taking more than three credit hours of classes pay a mandatory activity fee of $104.57 per term. Serving on the Committee for Fee Review is an opportunity for students to have a direct say in where their money goes. With the 41,953 full-time students enrolled in 2022, the total funding from the activity fee would amount to about $4,387,025.
“The activity fee supports campus organizations that benefit all students, such as the Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC), campus day care, Union Board and many more,” according to the IU Student Center page.
Other recent beneficiaries include IUSTV, WIUX, IU Student Government, Graduate and Professional Student Government, Student Legal Services and the IU Auditorium, according to student body president Cooper Tinsley.
The committee is made up of seven to nine students and chaired by Tinsley and Graduate and Professional Student Government President Anjali Gottipaty. The committee makes recommendations for funding to the provost. The entire process is overseen by the Vice Provost for Student Life, Lamar Hylton.
Interested students can attend the callout meeting from 5-5:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Maple Room of the Indiana Memorial Union. Applications are due Nov. 1. Those selected will be required to attend presentations from student organizations and campus auxiliaries seeking funding, as well as proposal reading sessions and training sessions. These sessions will take place from December to February.
