UPDATED: 13th street reopens following downed powerlines, 98 customers still without power Friday

13th Street reopened to normal traffic around 2:20 p.m. Friday after it was closed due to fallen powerlines running from Walnut Grove to Woodlawn Avenue. 

In an IU Notify Bloomington alert issued at 9:48 a.m. Friday, IU said the powerlines were down and that people should avoid the area. 

In another IU Notify Bloomington alert issued around 10:10 a.m., IU said 13th Street had closed to traffic. 

Fallen powerlines can electrocute people if they touch the lines or ground nearby, even if the lines are not humming or sparking, according to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Additionally, approximately 303 customers southwest of campus lost power Friday morning, according to Duke’s outage map. The cause of the outage is unknown, and Duke estimates it will restore power by 5:15 p.m. Friday.  

As of 3 p.m. Friday, at least 98 customers are still without power.

Monroe County is under a high wind warning until 11 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service. This includes wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. 

According to the NWS, strong winds will blow down trees and power lines, causing widespread outages. Travel will be difficult. 

The strongest winds are expected between 4-8 p.m., according to the NWS.  

The NWS recommends staying in the lowest portion of the home away from windows during the windstorm and avoiding falling debris and tree limbs.
