COLUMN: To be or not to be this Halloween

It's that time of the year where you can be anything, or more accurately anyone, you want to be. On Halloween almost everyone, from young children to adults, goes out to celebrate the night with candy and fun costumes. But when Oct. 31 rolls around, who is everyone going to be? And if you are looking for a cute costume, what’s the quickest?

The Coca-Cola group costume

Seeing a soda as one of this year’s popular costume ideas was not on my 2024 Halloween bingo card, but here we are. If you’re looking for something on the easier side for your costume this year, a Coca-Cola bottle might be the way to go. It’s the perfect costume for just one person or a group since there are so many different variations of the soda. All it consists of is deciding on your favorite flavor of Coke and using its color scheme to make your outfit. Pair with a matching can of your Coke of choice, and this outfit becomes a cute and simple costume — plus you have a sweet drink in your hand.

Felix from “Saltburn”

In November 2023, the movie “Saltburn” came out in theaters.  The film featured a wide array of characters, including Felix Catton, played by Jacob Elordi. With the movie missing Halloween last year, it seems that one of Felix’s iconic looks from the film has become a popular costume for 2024. Golden wings, a white tank top and jeans make up the outfit that Felix wears to a "A Midsummer Night's Dream" themed birthday party in the film. If you like to bake, “Saltburn” related snacks and treats, such as angel cake to match the costume, add a tasty element to the outfit. Though it’s a simple look to put together, it’s definitely one that people will recognize.

“The Wizard of Oz” group costume

Released in 1939, “The Wizard of Oz,” a movie about a young girl who finds herself in a magical land after a tornado, is a classic film. It’s not uncommon to see multiple people dressed up as the core group from the movie every year during the Halloween season. It seems the costume has grown in popularity this year though, in anticipation for the upcoming release of the film “Wicked,” which is set for Nov. 22 this year. Whether you choose to get someone to go with you as Glinda and Elphaba from “Wicked,” or you go with one of the other characters from the original movie as your costume, “The Wizard of Oz” is a classic Halloween inspiration. If you are going with a group of people, wearing different colored Converse sneakers to go with the character you are dressed as, like green converse for Elphaba or red converse for Dorothy, can add some fun, trendy synchronization to the costume.

Mia Thermopolis from “The Princess Diaries”

Considered a cult classic among fans, “The Princess Diaries,” released in July 2001, tells the story of young Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), who learns she is the princess of the distant country of Genovia and now must learn to look the part. Though the movie and its sequel, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” have been popular for many years, the franchise has recently returned to the forefront of pop culture thanks to confirmation of a third film posted by Hathaway on Instagram. With this announcement, the cute but simple costume that is Mia Thermopolis has re-emerged on the Halloween scene with fans dressing up as Mia from the movie's poster. With a white dress, headphones and sunglasses, this costume could be taken a step further by adding cute cards that offer pieces of advice on how to be a princess, like what Mia was told in the movie. Not only would you be a princess this Halloween, but you could help everyone else be one too.

A “Monster High” group costume

There seem to be many childhood favorites making a comeback this year on the Halloween costume front, including “Monster High.” The popular franchise from the 2010s includes a line of dolls, an animated television series, movies and even several video games. Both the films and shows follow the children of famous monsters, like Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy or Dracula, as they attend the local school Monster High. It is the main group of friends in this series that Halloween costumes typically take inspiration from, but the beauty of this series is that the list of characters is so extensive there are plenty to choose from. The bright clothing and funky jewelry make for a fun look, but if you want to take the costume a step further, the full-glam makeup and face paint that most of the characters are adorned with is a fun thing to include too. Put it all together and you have an interesting look that’s very nostalgic of the show and movies. This costume is great for anyone looking to mix the frightening with the fantastic.
