Illinois volleyball’s crunch-time offense proves too much as Indiana falls in three sets

Every set played out with a familiar rhythm.

For most of each set, it seemed like the match could go either way as both teams showcased a fast-paced, high-energy offense, often splitting defenders at the net with strategic kills down the line. Indiana volleyball and Illinois traded points, keeping the scoreline close.

However, when it mattered most, Illinois’ offense found another gear. Late in every set, the Fighting Illini strung together momentum-shifting runs with their dominant offense, leaving Indiana unable to close the gap. Despite Indiana’s best efforts, it fell short of catching up as Illinois pulled away to secure the victory.

Although the Hoosiers lost in three sets, they were competitive throughout, with Illinois' largest margin of victory being just six points. Indiana will have to wait until next year, however, to try for its first win at Huff Hall since 2007. The Hoosiers will get another chance to seek revenge this season when they host Illinois on Nov. 29.

Illinois dominated offensively, hitting 28.2% as a team. Graduate student outside hitter Raina Terry and junior outside hitter Averie Hernandez led the charge, tallying 16 and 12 kills, respectively.

With Illinois firing on all cylinders, Indiana struggled to match that dominance at the net. The Hoosiers hit just 13.2%, with junior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles the only Hoosier to reach double digits in kills, recording 11.

Illinois also effectively shut down Indiana’s other key attacker, junior outside hitter Avry Tatum, who was held to just six kills on 19 attempts.

Although Illinois ranks among the top serving teams in the Big Ten, Indiana outshined it at the service line, committing just four errors — its fewest this season — while recording seven aces. In comparison, the Fighting Illini had seven errors and five aces.

Defensively, Indiana couldn't keep up at the net, getting out-blocked by Illinois 10-7. Terry and sophomore middle blocker Cari Bohm led Illinois with five blocks each.

Indiana’s final match of the week is against in-state rival Purdue at 7 p.m. Saturday at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, marking the first time the Boilermakers have played volleyball in their famed basketball arena since 2016.
