Democrat Catherine Smith was elected Monroe County Treasurer on Tuesday after running uncontested.

Smith has served as county treasurer since January after filling the vacant spot left by Jessica McClellan, who resigned to serve as Bloomington’s city controller.

Smith has been involved with local government in Monroe County since January 2000, serving one four-year term as Monroe County’s chief deputy auditor. In 2009, she started the first of two consecutive terms as county treasurer. After eight years as treasurer, Smith served as county auditor starting in 2016 before eventually again assuming the role of county treasurer this year.

The county treasurer is elected to a four-year term. As treasurer, Smith’s primary responsibility is the collection of Monroe County property tax payments as well as explaining how taxes are spent.
