Republican incumbent Dave Hall has retained his seat in Indiana’s 62nd House District in one of the most contentious elections in the state.
Hall is winning by less than 800 votes. In 2022, he won the district by less than 100 votes. His opponent, Thomas Horrocks, has conceded and will not file for a recount. Horrocks was a first-time candidate, hoping to flip the swing district to Democratic control.
Hall owns a crop insurance company and farms corn and soybeans with his father in north Jackson County. Before running for state representative, he served in numerous positions in local government, including as president of the Jackson County Council. There, he helped start the Jackson-Jennings Work Release Center, which helped rehabilitate those dealing with addiction.
His priorities in his second term, according to his campaign website, include combating drug addiction, improving infrastructure and making high-speed internet more accessible. He opposed Bloomington’s proposed annexation of unincorporated communities.
He was one of two Republicans to vote against Senate Enrolled Act 202, legislation that changed tenure requirements and pushed colleges toward “intellectual diversity.”
State House District 62 surrounds Bloomington and includes all of Brown County and part of Jackson County. The state modified the district’s boundaries before the 2022 election, which made it more competitive — it used to include less of the metropolitan area surrounding Bloomington and more rural areas to the west.
