Indiana women’s basketball defeated Brown University 82-60 in its regular season opener Monday inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington.
The starting lineup for the Hoosiers consisted of graduate guards Chloe Moore-McNeil and Sydney Parrish, junior guards Shay Ciezki and Yarden Garzon and junior forward Lilly Meister.
Junior guard Lexus Bargesser missed the game due to a foot injury, which has her in a boot and using crutches. Sophomore guard Lenée Beaumont was listed as questionable with a knee injury, but did not see the court against the Bears.
It was a slow start for both offenses. Sophomore guard Olivia Young scored the first points of the game for the Bears with a 3-pointer. The Hoosiers then went on a 9-0 run, sparked by Parrish’s 3-pointer. Indiana held Brown to 7 points in the first quarter and 18.8% from the field.
The Hoosiers headed to the locker room up 39-21 after the first half. Brown scored 5 points off eight Indiana turnovers. Parrish tallied 9 points and seven rebounds.
Senior forward Karoline Striplin scored 10 points in the third quarter, going perfect from the field and the free-throw line. Indiana’s defense struggled as the Bears scored 23 points, 8 points off of seven Hoosier turnovers.
Indiana improved its defense and limited turnovers in the fourth quarter. They had two turnovers, and the Bears scored 16 points. Parrish scored 8 points and was 4-5 from the field.
The Hoosiers shot 50% from the field in their victory over the Bears. Parrish led all scorers, recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Striplin scored 17 coming off the bench.
The Hoosiers continue their season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall to face off against Harvard University. The matchup will stream on Big Ten+.
