Julie Thomas won the District 2 seat of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, running unopposed.
In May, Thomas narrowly secured the Democratic nomination over Peter Iverson, earning 51.53% of the vote compared to Iverson’s 48.47%.
Thomas moved to Monroe County in 1993. She attended IU and earned a doctorate in Russian history, and she later worked as an adjunct professor for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Southern New Hampshire University and Franklin College. Thomas started on the Board of Commissioners in December 2012.
With her reelection, Thomas aims to continue her efforts in energy efficiency. Some of her goals include promoting energy efficient vehicle purchases and working conservation projects in county buildings. She also intends to construct a new county jail.
The Monroe County Board of Commissioners supervises county road and bridge construction, authorizes contracts and claims against the county and maintains and supervises county property.
The District 2 seat represents Bloomington Township, which includes part of the city of Bloomington.
