Former Maryland running back Roman Hemby has signed with Indiana football, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel’s report Monday morning.

Hemby, who visited Indiana last weekend according to 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz, will be a redshirt senior with one season of eligibility remaining.

Across his four-year career with the Terrapins, Hemby played in 42 games and carried the ball 481 times for 2,347 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. He also caught 112 passes for 921 yards and five scores.

Hemby led the Terrapins this season with 607 rushing yards and six touchdowns along with 273 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

When Indiana defeated Maryland on Sept. 28, Hemby carried the ball 10 times for 117 rushing yards and a touchdown. He also caught five passes for 48 yards and a score.

Hemby was a 3-star recruit out of John Carroll School in Bel Air, Maryland, in the 2021 high school recruiting class. He was ranked as the 127th-best running back according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings.

As of Monday, Hemby is ranked the eight-best running back in the transfer portal. He becomes the second running back the Hoosiers have landed out of the portal after they also secured Lee Beebe Jr., who re-affirmed his commitment to Indiana on Dec. 17.

Hemby is the eighth player to join Indiana out of the portal alongside three defensive players, two specialists, a tight end and Beebe Jr.

With seventh-year senior running back Ty Son Lawton and fifth-year senior running back Justice Ellison both exhausting their eligibility, Hemby, Beebe Jr. and redshirt senior Kaelon Black will battle to become the lead back for the Hoosiers in 2025.
