Former Indiana men’s basketball player Keith Smart was named head coach at Utah Prep Academy in Hurricane, Utah, according to the school’s release Monday.

Smart, who drilled a game-winning shot to clinch Indiana’s fifth national championship in 1987, played at Indiana from 1986-88. He has made coaching stops around the NBA, serving as head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2003), Golden State Warriors (2010-11) and the Sacramento Kings (2011-13).

The Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native transitioned to coaching at the collegiate level in 2021, when he became an assistant under then-head coach Eric Musselman at the University of Arkansas. The two had ties dating back to the early 2000’s when Smart assisted Musselman with the Golden State Warriors.

Smart will now take the reins of a squad that is 16-4 this season and ranked the No. 1 prep school in the country, according to MaxPreps. He will coach AJ Dybantsa, who is the No. 1 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class and a Brigham Young University signee.

“I’m honored to join Utah Prep Academy,” Smart said in the release. “This is a program that has grown to unprecedented prominence in such a short period of time. I’m excited to build on the great work that’s already been done and help these young men achieve their goals both on and off the court.”

Smart was inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.
