Indiana women’s basketball returned to the hardwood Monday against Washington looking to break its three-game losing streak.
After the Hoosiers led by double digits in the final quarter, the contest was tied before they eventually defeated the Huskies 73-70 inside Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
Indiana got out to a quick start in the first quarter, outscoring Washington 21-16. The Hoosiers committed just two turnovers while the Huskies gave the ball away seven times as visitors notched 8 points off those miscues.
Junior guard Yarden Garzon went 4 for 4 from the field in the first period as she led with 9 points. In the second quarter, the Israel native scored 6, but the Hoosiers trailed by 2 at halftime after the Huskies ended the period on a 13-3 run.
However, the Cream and Crimson responded out of the locker room as they began the second half on a 9-0 run to regain the lead. Garzon scored her 1,000th career point in the period with a 3-pointer less than three minutes in. She scored 12 points in the quarter, bringing her total to 27 heading into the final quarter.
Garzon wasn’t alone as graduate student guard Sydney Parrish drained a pair of 3-pointers in her 10-point third quarter.
Leading by 13 with 10 minutes to play, Garzon notched yet another 3-pointer –– her eighth of the game –– as the Hoosiers led by 14. But the Huskies weren’t done just yet.
Washington went on an 11-0 run to pull within 3 with over five and half minutes remaining. The two squads went on their respective spurts throughout the middle stages of the quarter as the contest was tied twice.
But with senior forward Karoline Striplin’s pair of free throws and Parrish’s 3-pointer, the Hoosiers held on for a 3-point victory
Garzon finished with a career-high 35 points, going 13 for 18 from the field and 8 for 10 from 3-point range. Parrish notched 16 while Striplin added 11 in the Cream and Crimson’s first victory since Jan. 12 over Iowa.
Indiana (13-7, 5-4 Big Ten) now has six days until its next contest, which is slated for noon Feb. 2 against Nebraska inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington. The matchup will be televised on FS1.
