Monroe County is under a travel warning and winter storm warning due to Sunday’s snowfall. Schools and county government offices will be closed Monday.
The county was previously under a travel watch and advisory.
A travel warning is the highest level of local travel advisory, meaning that travel may be restricted to emergency management officials only. According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, people are directed to:
- Refrain from travel
- Comply with necessary emergency measures
- Cooperate with public officials and disaster services if directed to execute emergency operations plans
- Obey and comply with lawful directions of properly identified officers.
Monroe County offices will be closed Monday, but emergency services will remain available. All Monroe County Community School Corporation schools will be closed Monday, and in-person activities are canceled. There will be no e-learning.
City of Bloomington sanitation services, including trash collection, will operate on a one-day delay this week.
A winter storm warning is in effect for Monroe County and much of south central Indiana until 7 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Snow and sleet accumulations between 6 and 11 inches are expected, as well as wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour.
Roads will likely be slick, according to the NWS, and high winds and snow could knock down tree limbs and power lines. Sporadic power outages are also possible.
If residents must travel, the NWS recommends bringing an extra flashlight, food, water, warm clothing and winter storm kit items like tire chains and booster cables.
Bloomington Transit buses will not operate Monday.
