PRESS RELEASE: MCDP to Postpone County Councilperson At-Large Caucus Due to Anticipated Inclement Weather

The following is a press release written by David Henry for The Monroe County Democratic Party.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Monroe County Democratic Party will postpone the office vacancy caucus to fill pro tempore the position of Monroe County Councilperson At-Large, which was to begin at 1PM at the Monroe County Courthouse this Sunday. MCDP consulted with the Indiana Office of the Secretary of State Election Division, Indiana Democratic Party officials, and county government officials prior to making the decision.

National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for our area, with ice and hazardous road conditions highly likely to develop in the early morning on Sunday January 5th. These conditions would put the caucus at risk and also risk a low turnout for a consequential appointment as road crews reach the entire county.

MCDP has rescheduled the caucus for Sunday, January 19th, 2025 at 1:00PM at the Nat U. Hill Room, Monroe County Courthouse, 100 E Kirkwood Ave, Bloomington, Indiana. Indiana Code requires the MCDP to provide at least 10 days written notice to our precinct committee ahead of a re-scheduled caucus which is ongoing at this time.  Vice Chair of the MCDP, Efrat Rosser, will serve as presiding officer.

Prior to the deadline for filing, nine candidates stepped forward for consideration to fill the office vacancy caused by the passing of long-time Councilperson Cheryl Munson. They are:
Matt Caldie
Richard Carter
Rob Council
Joe Davis
Liz Feitl
Andrew Guenther
Sarah Larson
Scott Shackleford
Ilana Stonebraker

Their candidate statements may be found at www.monroedems.org in the Blue Revue Newsletter.

MCDP does not conduct hybrid or virtual caucuses for offices of public trust like a county councilperson. Caucuses are conducted by secret ballot, and in a public setting with media present. While only precinct committee members may vote, those members represent neighborhoods around the county. For a list of the MCDP precinct committee, please visit monroedems.org

“We take safety seriously. As a kid who grew up in the Northern Ohio snowbelt, this weather pattern concerns even me.” said David Henry, MCDP Chair and Monroe County Councilperson. “We want to assure we have a full-throated vote for our newest County Councilperson and give the candidates the time and opportunity to be considered by our full committee. We will just have to wait out Jack Frost a little longer to seat the full Council for this term.”
