The intersection of East Third Street and South College Mall Road is closed indefinitely because of a water main break, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

BPD advised people just after 4 p.m. Friday to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. The road is one of Bloomington’s busiest intersections, located by College Mall and the new Taco Bell Cantina.

Potential alternate routes include East Moores Pike and East 10th Street. The intersection of East Second Street and South College Mall Road is also open.

Google Maps shows heavy traffic southbound on South College Mall Road above East Third Street and moderate traffic on East 10th Street above campus.

Bloomington Police Department did not immediately respond to questions on when the intersection could reopen.

A worker on the site told the IDS at 5:45 p.m. Friday that the crew hadn’t found the source of the break. Workers and police are directing traffic, heavily backed up, across the intersection slowly.
