Potential Indiana men’s basketball head coaching candidate Dusty May signed a multi-year contract with Michigan, according to a Michigan Athletics release on Friday.

May was a student manager for Indiana under head coach Bob Knight from 1996-2000. Amidst speculation that he may be a contender for the Hoosiers head coaching job and after his team defeated Indiana 70-67 on Feb. 8, May said postgame he “loved being at Michigan.”

Nearly two weeks later, the Terre Haute, Indiana, native’s immediate future is in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In his first year with the Wolverines, May and his squad are atop the Big Ten with a 20-5 overall record and 12-2 in the conference. May replaced head coach Juwan Howard, who Michigan fired after an 8-24 season in 2023-24.

"I am grateful to (Michigan Athletic Director) Warde (Manuel), U-M President Santa Ono, and all the members of the Board of Regents for the trust and support they have given me as the head coach," May said in the release. “We have built a solid foundation; however, there is much more work to be done. I look forward to those challenges and what the future holds for me and my family in Ann Arbor."

Prior to joining the Wolverines, May was the head coach at Florida Atlantic University for six seasons, amassing a 126-69 record. In the 2023 NCAA Tournament, the Owls reached the Final Four and ultimately ended the season with a 35-4 record — the best in program history — and a Conference USA title.
