The IU Police Department and the Bloomington Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Read Hall at approximately 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to IUPD Public Information Officer Hannah Skibba.

They located the fire, which occurred in an unoccupied room, and extinguished it as the room’s sprinkler systems were activated. Skibba said in an email to the Indiana Daily Student on Friday morning that a “small number” of students were relocated temporarily because of the water from the sprinkler.

At approximately 10:25 p.m., an IU Bloomington alert instructed displaced students to report to the Forest Residence Hall dining hall for assistance. The alert also ordered individuals to avoid the area around Read Hall.

At 11:18 p.m., a final alert was sent giving most Read Hall residents clearance to return to the building, except for those in Beck wing as it remained closed. Beck residents were instructed to report to the main lobby for further assistance.

Skibba said it was an electrical fire, but the cause has yet to be determined.
