Indiana men’s basketball junior forward Malik Reneau is entering the transfer portal, he announced Tuesday night on X. Reneau is the first Hoosier to announce his future intents since the program hired Darian DeVries as its new head coach Tuesday evening.
Reneau led the Hoosiers in scoring this past season, notching 13.3 points per game. He averaged 5.5 rebounds and two assists while playing 23.2 minutes per contest. After starting all 33 games in 2023-24, Reneau came off the bench in six of his final seven appearances this past season.
The Miami native joins sophomore guard Gabe Cupps as Indiana’s first two players to hit the transfer portal since the team’s season — and head coach Mike Woodson’s four-year tenure — ended without an NCAA Tournament bid Sunday night.
“I want to thank Coach Woodson and his entire staff for giving me an opportunity to play for (Indiana University),” Reneau said in a statement on X. “I will miss the fans and all the great people in Bloomington. After discussions with my family, I’ve chosen to enter the portal.”
Reneau played in all 35 games as a true freshman and drew three starts while learning under All-American forward Trayce Jackson-Davis. Reneau finished his freshman campaign with an average of 6.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
With Jackson-Davis off to the NBA after the 2022-23 season, Reneau ascended to the starting role, and he flourished. The 6-foot-9, 232-pounder scored 15.4 points and pulled down six rebounds per game while starting alongside eventual first-round NBA draft pick Kel’el Ware. Reneau earned All-Big Ten honorable mention for his work.
Reneau started 19 of 26 appearances in 2024-25, a season in which he missed five games due to an MCL sprain suffered Jan. 2 and another game because of an illness that required a trip to the emergency room.
Over his final eight appearances in the Cream and Crimson, Reneau averaged 16.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 55.7% from the field. He was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention once more.
Now, as DeVries tries to build a contender in Bloomington, he will likely have to do it without Reneau.
