In an email to students and faculty Thursday, IU President Pamela Whitten announced former IU faculty member and associate dean David Reingold as Executive Vice President and Chancellor for the IU Bloomington campus.

According to the email, Reingold will begin his role June 2, 2025.

Reingold was first introduced to the public as a potential candidate for the chancellor position Feb. 27 in a town hall meeting hosted by IU. Since 2015, Reingold has worked at Purdue as a professor, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and as the senior vice president for policy planning. Reingold worked at IU from 1997 to 2015 as both a professor and executive associate dean for the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

“David’s knowledge of and deep love for IU Bloomington makes him the ideal person to serve as the first chancellor of the campus in nearly two decades,” Whitten wrote in the email.

IU reinstated the chancellor position in June 2024. To head the search, IU established a 19-person search committee and hired Isaacson, Miller, an executive search firm, as a search partner.

IU Bloomington has not had someone serve in the chancellor position since 2006. There have been four total chancellors in the campus’ history and all eight other campuses have a chancellor. Since 2006, the chancellor responsibilities have been taken on by the president at IU.

In June 2024, Whitten sent an email to the Bloomington campus saying a chancellor was needed due to the size of campus, and “challenges of higher education.”

According to the email Thursday, Reingold’s responsibilities will include finance, administration, community engagement, enrollment management, student life, campus research and creative activities. Reingold will also supervise the Office of the Provost.

“I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work,” Reingold said in an email to the Bloomington campus Thursday. “I look forward to giving back to the university that has given me so much and leading the IU Bloomington campus to new heights in education, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the state and beyond.”
