At a meeting of the IU Student Media Publications Board on Friday March 28, juniors Mia Hilkowitz and Andrew Miller were named the next IDS co-editors-in-chief for the upcoming fall semester.

Both pursuing a degree in journalism at the Media School, Hilkowitz and Miller have been reporting for the IDS since their first semesters at IU.

Hilkowitz has held many positions in the IDS newsroom and is currently a managing editor, editing and coordinating stories being published in the IDS.

Miller is currently a news editor, leading teams of reporters on investigations, scoops and further information on city and campus news altogether.

The two editors have seen many newsworthy events throughout their time at IU, such as covering the encampment in Dunn Meadow last spring, political elections and changes to coaching staff.

“What our newsroom has accomplished is not a testament to anything other than the strengths of our reporters and editors. Thus, our guiding philosophy is this: give our staffers the room they need to thrive, push them to success, make mistakes, learn from them and support them throughout their careers here.” said Hilkowitz and Miller.

Each semester in the IDS newsroom tops the previous in accomplishments in every aspect of news. Hilkowitz and Miller are committed to maintaining this level of consistency and building on it. They are hoping to better support their visuals desk, specifically supplying student photographers with the materials needed to generate quality content for the IDS as well as better support their opinions desk and guest columns as they wish to build a community within the IDS, writing for the bigger community of Bloomington.

“One of the IDS’ most successful initiatives thus far was the town hall hosted in February. From that one event, we received numerous story ideas, ideas for areas to target and most importantly, met some of our dedicated readers.” said Hilkowitz and Miller. This is an initiative they plan to continue throughout their time as co-editors-in-chief.

After both serving in various positions throughout their six semesters at the IDS and speaking to past and present editors-in-chief, Hilkowitz and Miller feel confident to lead the IDS newsroom this upcoming fall and are excited to cultivate an environment for budding journalists where they can learn, grow and thrive.
