Monroe County, along with swaths of Illinois and Indiana, is under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. Sunday ahead of expected severe weather. Portions of Kentucky and Missouri are also under the watch.

The National Weather Service issued the watch at 1 p.m. Sunday. A tornado watch means conditions are appropriate for tornadoes to form, but that none have been observed. If a tornado is formed or is imminent, the NWS will upgrade the alert to a tornado warning.

In the event of a tornado warning, residents should seek shelter immediately on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. If that’s not possible, get to the innermost point of your building away from windows.

According to the NWS’ most recent forecast, Monroe County can expect scattered showers and thunderstorms until 5 p.m. Sunday. Severe storms are likely after, until 2 a.m. Monday, and wind gusts up to around 30 mph are possible.

Monroe County residents can monitor the forecast through local weather channels and NWS live trackers
