Shawn Hackney was arrested and charged with burglary with a deadly weapon, a level two felony, and armed robbery, a level three felony, on Monday.
Bloomington Police Department officers responded to a reported robbery around 5 p.m. Monday at an apartment on the 1000 block of West Cascade Avenue. There, they arrested the 40-year-old Gosport, Indiana, man who was walking through the street’s wooded dead-end area.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Hackney admitted to officers that he had entered the apartment through an opening under the unit’s porch and hoped no one was home.
Police said Hackney found a Colt AR-15 airsoft gun and an M48 knife in the apartment, then went to the male victim, who was upstairs in bed. While armed, Hackney demanded money, a cellphone, money from a safe and guns from the victim.
The victim told officers that Hackney erratically ordered him around the apartment with a knife, pointing out items and making bizarre comments. Hackney left the residence with the Airsoft gun and knife, then the victim called the police.
Hackney has two other criminal cases pending in Monroe County.
On Nov. 18, 2024, Hackney was charged with impersonation of a public servant, a level six felony, and was granted monitored conditional release four days later.
On Jan. 9, Hackney was charged with residential entry, a level six felony, and two level six felony drug possession charges. He was released for treatment on Feb. 13. The court documented Feb. 19 that Hackney left the treatment facility, which was a violation of the court order. A warrant for his arrest with hold was issued the same day.
Hackney is now held in the Monroe County Jail with a $50,000 surety bond and $500 cash bond for the burglary case. His initial hearing was held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
