Indiana football lands pair of defensive transfers out of the portal

After Indiana football’s spring game April 17, second-year head coach Curt Cignetti said his squad still has a long way to go.

“We need depth in some areas,” Cignetti said to reporters postgame. “You'll probably ask me which ones. I'm not going to necessarily point those out. I'll let you figure it out on your own.”

Since then, Cignetti has added a pair of defensive pieces via the spring transfer portal window. Former Kent State University defensive end Stephan Daley committed to the Hoosiers on Sunday, according to his X post, while former Maryland linebacker Kellen Wyatt did so Tuesday, according to 247 Sports.

Stephan Daley

Daley entered the transfer portal April 3, just over a week before Kent State head coach Kenni Burns was fired. Burns was previously placed on administrative leave in March.

Daley started in all 12 games in 2024 for the Golden Flashes, recording 51 total tackles, nine tackles for loss and four sacks. He also notched a forced fumble and recovered a fumble.

In 34 total games at Kent State, the 6-foot-1, 260-pound Daley racked up 103 total tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and six sacks.

Daley follows in former Indiana defensive lineman CJ West’s footsteps. West, who will likely be selected in the 2025 NFL Draft from Thursday to Saturday, also transferred from Kent State to Indiana in the spring transfer portal window in 2024. Like West did at the time, Daley has one season of eligibility remaining.

Kellan Wyatt

Wyatt played in 11 of the Terrapins’ 12 games in 2024, making 10 starts. He totaled 30 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles, leading the team in tackles for loss and second in sacks.

Across his 35 total games as a Terrapin, the 6-foot-2, 262-pound Wyatt racked up 48 solo tackles and 80 total tackles, while notching 15 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.

In two games against Indiana in 2023 and 2024, Wyatt and the Terrapins went 1-1. Across those two matchups, he accumulated seven total tackles, one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Wyatt, who hails out of Glen Burnie, Maryland, has one season of eligibility remaining. He entered the portal April 16 and visited Indiana on Monday, just a day before pledging his commitment Tuesday. He is expected to play on the defensive line for the Hoosiers.
